We have searched far and wide to bring you some simple ideas to motivate employees. Some of them are about communication, some about creating a fun working environment and some are just common sense but require a bit of practice to put in place.

Make sure every employee is aware of the company’s MVO
1. Communicate the Mission of your company
2. Explain clearly the leadership’s Vision
3. Set meaningful Objectives
4. Make sure they know how their tasks help the company fulfill its MVO

Celebrate milestones
5. Celebrate Birthdays
6. Celebrate Engagements
7. Celebrate Pregnancies
8. Celebrate Work anniversaries
9. Celebrate Promotions

Encourage friendly competition
10. Offer rewards for attaining goals
11. Have a leaderboard to easily see how far of the top you are
12. Offer bragging rights or special privilege to those who finish on top of the leaderboard(s) each month

Make sure employee’s objectives are SMART
13. Specific. Don’t say “be good with customers”, go with something specific like “close customers”.
14. Measurable. Put goals on a number of closed customers, not something like “a lot”.
15. Attainable. Make sure the goal is reachable; you don’t want employees to be discouraged because they will never reach it.
16. Relevant. Make sure it’s relevant to every person. Closing customers has nothing to do with a production worker.
17. Time-Bound. Give a maximum date to reach the goal. People won’t feel as motivated if they have no time limit.

Encourage skill learning
18. Give annual useful in-house training to employees.
19. Pay for external training and encourage employees to find one they like annually.
20. Setup a mentoring program

Make your workplace fun
21. Allow pets at work. It’s great for morale!

Listen to employee suggestions
22. Keep an open mind; you never know when the next great idea will come.
23. Give credit to those who deserve it.

Care about your employees
24. Ask them how they are doing.
25. Remember when they say something is going badly (like having a cold) and ask them later how it’s going now, if they’re feeling better, etc.
26. Genuinely care.

Recognize good work
27. Send hand-written “Thank You” notes. Take some time to thank those who went the extra mile for the company. It takes very little time and is greatly appreciated.

Provide a challenge
28. Give your employees a challenge in their current job.
29. Let them try some tasks of another position.

Create a fun environment
30. Have a napping space. A 15 min power nap can give you a boost in energy that will make you more productive for the rest of the day.
31. Encourage socialization by holding monthly events during lunch or work hours (Can be picnic, ping-pong competition, happy hour…)
32. Shake things up from time to time. Let someone else conduct the meeting, have unplanned events, change people of position for a day or a week.

Bonus: Have an employee stock ownership program. This is not accepted has something very motivating by everyone when it’s part of the employee’s regular pay system. But if you give them stocks for giving a great idea to improve production process, there is no doubt they will be very happy, motivated and even more engaged in the company’s success.
